What do you think? Do all preachers have understanding of the Scripture and just deceiving people for their own benefits? No! There are genuine preachers but among these also are those who do not understand the letters of the Scripture they read but proceeds to preach, and a larger group is now existing of who "believe" they know what the Scripture is saying. The Scripture made us to know that the Spirit of God gives man inspiration of the mind of God; the letter kills but the Spirit gives life. Jesus spoke regarding this "you search the Scripture bcos you THOUGHT in it is eternal life" but how do you get life out of what you don't understand?
John 1:12 points us to the transformation Power that is released to us not only when we believe but also receive Christ. Jesus also pointed to the progressive manifestation of that Power during His discourse with the woman at the well, "...spring of water welling up to eternal life" John 4:14. The Scripture also informs us He could be grieved and stand back for you to display your folly; damned is such congregation if none has the gift of discernment.
Do everyone that reads the Bible understand it? No! capital no, you could challenge it. However, any "reasonable" person could match up the different part and come up with a man-acceptable sermon e.t.c But someone who'll be truthful will be like the Ethiopian eunuch Acts 8:26-38, consider vs 30-31. Note very well, he came all the way from his country to Jerusalem to worship God. He read but did not understand and the Holy Spirit directed Philip to him.
Look at this: if Philip did not come around and on his getting back to his country, someone asks him to explain that passage to a group since he just came back from Jerusalem, Conference, Bible college e.t.c, what will he explain to them, especially if he's the type that doesn't want people to know that he himself is ignorant of that passage?
Jesus was asked by the disciples why he kept speaking to the people in parables Matt 13. Jesus made them to know that the understanding of the mysteries of the kingdom has been given the disciples and not everyone. So, someone can even go to Bible College and may not understand the Scripture, maybe coming off better as an expert of letters!
Ps 111:10 together with 1John2:3-4, established the connection of keeping God's commandment with knowing and understanding God (the Word of life) Answer to prayers is also linked in 1John3:22 to the same thread of obeying His commandments.
Back to the basic; John1:12, believing and receiving Christ is accepting Christ and not stopping there but also living His life, that is keeping God's commandments. When you begin to obey God, you'll be surprised how the Scripture expands to your understanding. You won't get there one day but the Holy Spirit is there to help in obeying God as well as giving understanding of God's mind beyond the letters on the pages of the Bible.
Why is understanding the Scripture very important? Apart from the benefit of knowing God's mind for you and those you are responsible for, it helps when you go on your knees to pray e.t.c but remember this very well; the devil and his agants will use the letters of the Scripture to deceive many! The Scripture warned us that the spirit of lawlessness is already at work and check the number of religious institutions that have become the temple of satan and places of lawlessness.
